A user view is a saved layout of a register, ledger, schedule, task board, or the Value Dashboard — which columns it shows, how it's filtered and sorted, and how it's grouped. Users save their own views as they work, and administrators manage every view in the instance under Administration > User Views.
This article covers managing views as an administrator, in both the Advanced and Simple Models. It needs Full Admin, or an Admin Role with access to User Views: Update to edit shared views, or Full to also share and delete them — see Admin Roles. For saving views as you work, see Register Views.
How views work
- Shared and private views — a shared view is offered to every user with access to its page. A private view belongs to the user who saved it, and only they see it.
- Parent and View For — each view is for one page, such as the RAID Register or the schedule. Its Parent is the type of item it shows, and its View For is the page. See What a view can be for.
- Where it's offered — a view can be offered on every initiative classification, or only on some. A view saved inside a Simple Model program, or at the enterprise level, is only offered there.
- At least one shared view — every page keeps at least one shared view, so the last one is protected. See Views that must stay.
Finding a view
Navigate to Administration > User Views. The page lists every view in the instance — the shared views, and the private views each user has saved. Search by name, or use the column filters to narrow the list. For each view, the list shows:
- Name — the view's name, as users see it in the view selector.
- Parent — the type of item the view shows.
- View For — the page the view applies to.
- Default Register — the register format the view opens in. For the Initiative, Benefit, Measures, and RAID registers, it's card, table, or visualization, which share the same saved views. Ledger views show ledger, and Task Board views board.
- Available For — the initiative classifications the view is offered on.
- Visibility — Shared or Private.
- User — for a private view, who it belongs to.
- Updated — when the view was last changed.

Click a view's name to open its page, with Edit and Delete at the top.
Shown for every view
- Parent, Name, and View For — as in the list.
- Program Classification — the ID of the Simple Model program the view was saved in. Blank for views saved anywhere else. Set automatically.
- Enterprise Only — true where the view was saved at the enterprise level, so it's only offered on the enterprise's registers and schedule. Set automatically.
- Default Register — true where the view has a register format set. To see which format, check the Default Register column in the list.
- Visibility — All Users for a shared view, or the name of the user a private view belongs to. For a private view, Share is shown here — see Sharing a user's view.
- Config — the view's layout. See The view's config.
Shown for some views
- Default for — Value Dashboard views only. Who the view opens for by default — see Setting the default Value Dashboard view.
- Available For — only for views limited to selected initiative classifications. The classifications it's offered on.
Sharing a user's view
A private view can be shared with all users from its page. This is the only way to share a Value Dashboard view, as they can't be shared from the dashboard itself. Sharing needs Full Admin, or Full access to User Views. To share a view:
- Navigate to Administration > User Views.
- Click the view's name. To find Value Dashboard views, filter View For to INVESTMENT_DASHBOARD.
- Under Visibility, click Share.
The view is then available to all users, and its Visibility shows All Users.
Setting the default Value Dashboard view
A shared Value Dashboard view can be made the default for all users. It then opens for everyone on the Value Dashboard, unless they've set a personal default of their own. Only one view can be the default at a time. To make a view the default:
- Navigate to Administration > User Views.
- Click the shared Value Dashboard view's name.
- Under Default for, click Set as Default View. Where another view is already the default, its name is shown first.
The view replaces the previous default, and Default for shows All Users.
Creating a shared view
The easiest way to create a shared view is to set it up on the page itself, and save it as a new view with Visibility set to Shared — see Register Views. To create one here instead:
- Navigate to Administration > User Views.
- Click New.
- Enter a Name.
- Select the Parent.
- Select the page the view is for from View For.
- Choose Available For:
- All Initiative classifications — the view is offered everywhere the page appears.
- Select Initiative Classifications — the view is only offered on initiatives of the classifications you choose. The list shows the classifications where that page is enabled.
- Enter the view's Config.
- Click Create.
Views created here are shared with all users.
Editing a view
To edit a view:
- Navigate to Administration > User Views.
- Click the view's name.
- Click Edit.
- Change its Name, Parent, View For, Available For, or Config.
- Click Save.
To change a view's layout, it's usually easier to open it on its page, change it there, and save it.
Deleting a view
Deleting a view needs Full Admin, or Full access to User Views. To delete a view:
- Navigate to Administration > User Views.
- Click the view's name.
- Click Delete.
- Confirm.
Where a view can't be deleted, Delete isn't shown — see Views that must stay. Deleting a user's private view removes it for that user. Where an Initiative Workbook's benefit or cost ledger widget uses the view, the widget switches to the first available ledger view instead — see Configuring the Initiative Workbook.
What a view can be for
A view's Parent decides which pages it can be for:
- Initiative — the Initiative Register, the Value Dashboard, and the cost, benefit, measure, resource demand, and resource demand allocation ledgers.
- Benefit — the Benefit Register.
- Measure — the Measures Register.
- RAID Item — the RAID Register.
- Cost — the Costs Register.
- Task — the Tasks table, the My Tasks table on the Personal Dashboard, the schedule, and the Task Board.
- Series — the Reporting Dashboard.
- Resource Demand — the Resource Demand Register.
Timesheet views are controlled by Amplify, and don't need to be managed here.
The view's config
A view's Config holds its layout — its columns, filters, sorting, and grouping — in JSON format. It must be valid JSON, or the view can't be saved. Rather than writing a config by hand, copy one from an existing view with a similar layout, and adjust it.
Views that must stay
Every page needs at least one shared view, so Amplify protects the last one:
- The last shared view for a page can't be deleted, and its View For can't be changed. Create another shared view for the page first.
- The last shared view available for all classifications can't be limited to selected classifications, or made private.
For saving and sharing views on a register itself, see Register Views.
