Baselines are switched on for each initiative classification in the Advanced Model, or for each program in the Simple Model, and team roles control who can take and update them. Initiative classifications set the kind of baseline recorded, and whether baselines are also taken automatically, on a schedule. For what a baseline is, and where it shows, see Baselines.
This article covers both the Advanced and Simple Models, and needs administrator access in the Advanced Model, or program administrator access in the Simple Model.
Enabling baselines
Advanced Model
Baselines are enabled on the initiative classification's Baseline tab — see Configuring Initiative Classifications (Advanced Model). The tab has two sections.
Manual Baselines lets users take baselines whenever they need to. Turn it on, then choose which kind to record:
- Record editable baselines
- Record non-editable baselines
At least one must be selected. Both can only be turned on together before any baselines of the classification have been taken. For the difference, see Baselines.
Automatic Baselines takes a baseline on a recurring schedule, for every active initiative of the classification:
- Frequency — every 2 weeks, monthly, quarterly, or yearly, with the day, month, and time it runs. The time follows the time zone set under Site Settings. Choose an off-peak time where you can.
- Start Date — when the first baseline is taken. It can't be in the past. Clearing it pauses the schedule.
- Set as Active Baseline — makes each new baseline the active one. Turn it off to take baselines in the background without changing what dashboards compare against.
Next baseline shows when the next one will be taken. Automatic baselines are always editable, and are named after their frequency, such as Monthly Automated Baseline.
Simple Model
In the Simple Model, baselines are recorded for the whole program, not for each project. Turn on Enable Baselines under the program's Configuration > Features. Program baselines are always editable, so projects can update them as they change — see Program Features.
Stage gate baselines
Baselines can also be taken automatically when a stage gate is approved, with Record Baseline on the stage. See Configuring the Stage Gate Process.
Permissions
Baseline access is set on each team role:
- Baselines — None hides baselines from users. Read lets them view baselines. Full lets them take and update baselines, and covers the three permissions below.
- Benefit Baseline — lets users add or update benefits in a baseline.
- Cost Baseline — lets users update cost baselines.
- Schedule Baseline — lets users update the schedule in a baseline.
See Team Roles. For taking and updating baselines, see Taking and Updating Baselines.
