Resource capacity is how much of each resource type your organization has available, compared against the demand for it. Amplify uses two kinds of capacity:
- Current capacity — the people you have now. It's the total of the individual capacity of every user assigned the resource type.
- Planned capacity — the people you plan to have in each period, including hires and contractors not yet in Amplify. It's set by the resource manager for each resource type.
This article covers both the Advanced and Simple Models. Viewing or changing planned capacity needs the Resource Capacity permission — see Configuring Resources (Advanced Model). For how resource management fits together, see Managing Resources.
An example
- Two users are assigned the Engineer resource type: one at 1 FTE, the other at 0.5 FTE. Current capacity for Engineers is 1.5 FTE.
- Demand for Engineers next year is 2 FTE. The organization agrees to bring in a contractor at 0.5 FTE, so the resource manager sets planned capacity for next year to 2 FTE — well before the contractor starts.
Setting current capacity
Each user's capacity is set when they're assigned a resource type, under Administration > Manage Users — see Configuring Resources (Advanced Model).
Setting planned capacity
Planned capacity is available where Enable Resource Capacity Planning is turned on for the initiative's classification.
Manage planned capacity at the enterprise level. Turn on Enable Resource Capacity Planning only on the enterprise's classification, so capacity is planned once for the whole organization, against demand from every initiative.
To set planned capacity:
- Navigate to the initiative's Properties page.
- Under Resource Capacity, click the resource type. Every resource type in the organization is listed.
- On the Dashboard tab, review demand for the resource type against its capacity. Click a month in the chart to look at that period.
- On the Resource Capacity tab, enter the planned capacity for each period.
FTE or days
Capacity and demand can be tracked in full-time equivalents (FTE) or days, depending on how your organization plans its work. Values entered in FTE are converted to days automatically, so switching between them doesn't mean entering values again. Speak to your Customer Success Manager to change the unit your organization uses.
