The ROI Dashboard, under Dashboards > ROI on an initiative's side menu, shows the return on investment (ROI) of the initiative and each initiative directly beneath it. A chart compares the initiative's costs with its benefit return by financial year, and a table shows how much each initiative beneath it contributes, using the contribution weightings set on the Benefit Map.
The ROI Dashboard relies on the Benefit Map, which is being phased out. The dashboard can still be used for now, but avoid building new processes that depend on it.
This article covers both the Advanced and Simple Models. The dashboard is available where it's enabled for the initiative's classification, or the project type — see Standard Dashboards. Depending on your instance, benefits may be called impacts, including in the dashboard's labels.
The chart
The chart, [Classification] Benefit Return by Financial Year, shows the initiative's costs, its benefit return, or both, for each financial year. Above it, a line describes what's currently shown.
Changing what's shown
Click Filters to open the options. The chart updates as soon as an option changes.
- Cost / Benefit — chart the benefit return (Net Benefit), the costs (Cost), or both side by side (Both).
- Series — which values to draw: the plan or budget, forecast, actuals, and baseline.
- Presentation — Non-Cumulative shows each year's own value. Cumulative adds each year to the ones before, as a running total.
- Reporting Groups — filter by your own custom fields, with Show on Dashboards turned on, to include only the items with the values chosen. See Custom Fields (Advanced Model).
Unlike the Value Dashboard, the ROI Dashboard has no date, stage, classification, or cost category filters, and the chart's settings can't be saved as a view — they go back to the defaults when the page is reopened. For those, see Value Dashboard.
Investment and return by initiative
Below the chart, the table lists each initiative directly beneath this one. It shows the whole plan and budget, and isn't changed by the chart's filters.
- Initiative — the initiative's name. Click it to open the initiative.
- Benefits — how many benefits it contributes to.
- Budget and % of Total Budget — its total cost budget, and its share of this initiative's budget.
- Net Benefit and % of Total Return — the planned benefit return allocated to it, and its share of this initiative's planned return.
- ROI — its return on investment, from its allocated return and its budget.
Click a column header to sort by it; click it again to reverse the order. Click Show Benefits on an initiative's row to list the benefits it contributes to, with how much each contributes.
The last row is the total for this initiative, with its total budget, planned return, and ROI.
How return is allocated
An initiative's return is worked out from the Benefit Map. Each connection from an initiative to a benefit on the map has a weighting — its share of that benefit. The initiative's return is its share of each benefit's planned return, added up. An initiative that isn't on the map, or has no weighted connections, has no return. See Benefit Map.
Unallocated benefits
Where some of this initiative's planned return isn't allocated to an initiative on the map, a highlighted row shows how much, and its share of the total. Show its benefits to see which they are — each shows how much of it is unallocated, or that it hasn't been added to the map at all. Add the benefits to the map, or weight their connections, to allocate their return.
For net present value, see NPV Dashboard. For the other standard dashboards, and choosing which are available, see Standard Dashboards.
