Resource types are the roles or kinds of people your organization plans work around, such as Engineer or Project Manager. In the Advanced Model, an administrator creates each resource type as a resource classification, assigns resource types to users, and then makes them available on the initiative classifications that need them.
This article covers the Advanced Model, and needs administrator access. For the Simple Model, see Configuring Resources (Simple Model). For how resource management fits together, see Managing Resources.
Creating a resource type
To create a resource type:
- Navigate to Administration > Classifications.
- Click + Classification.
- Select Resource as the Object Type.
- Fill in the resource type's settings, described below.
- Click Create.
- Name and Color — identify the resource type across Amplify.
- Rate (per hour) — the standard hourly rate for this resource type, with up to two decimal places. Users assigned the resource type inherit it by default. Optional.
- Workflow — the Resource Demand Approval workflow that approves demand for this resource type. Optional: where it's left empty, demand for the resource type isn't sent for approval. Giving each resource type its own workflow lets each have its own approvers. See Approval Workflow Types.
To edit a resource type, click Edit next to it in the Resource Classifications section of the Classifications page. Changing its workflow, where demand already exists, resets the approval status of that demand. You'll see how many demands are affected before you save.
Custom fields mapped to a resource type, on its Properties tab, describe the capabilities of the people assigned it — such as a qualification, or a region. See Custom Fields (Advanced Model).
Assigning resource types to users
A user needs a resource type before they can be allocated to demand for it. Their capacity for that type sets how much of them is available. To assign a resource type to a user:
- Navigate to Administration > Manage Users.
- Click the user.
- Click Edit.
- Under Resourcing, click Add Resource Type.
- Select the Resource Type.
- Enter the user's Capacity (FTE) — for example, 1 for full-time, or 0.5 for half-time. Where your organization plans in hours, this is Capacity (Hours per week) instead.
- Check the user's Rate (per hour), inherited from the resource type, and change it if needed.
- Fill in any custom fields for the resource type.
- Save your changes.
To take a resource type away from a user, click Remove Resource Type.
Enabling resources on an initiative classification
To enable resources:
- Navigate to Administration > Classifications.
- Click Edit next to the initiative classification.
- On the General Configuration tab, select either or both:
- Enable Resource Demand — lets these initiatives request resources.
- Enable Resource Capacity Planning — lets these initiatives plan capacity for each resource type. It's usually only enabled on the enterprise's classification, so capacity is planned once for the organization.
- Where you selected Enable Resource Demand, select the resource types these initiatives can request from Available Resource Types.
- Click Save.
Removing a resource type from Available Resource Types deletes the demand for it, and its data, on every initiative of that classification. You'll see how many demands are affected before you save.
Permissions
Each team role sets what its members can do with resources:
-
Resource Demand — None prevents access to resource demand and allocation. Full allows access to the Resource Demand register, and creating demand. What else they can do is set by:
- Demand — Read to view demand, or Update to change it. Project managers need Update.
- Allocation — Read to view allocations, or Update to allocate and remove resources. Resource managers need Update.
- Resource Capacity — None, Read, or Update for planned capacity.
For approving demand, see Resource Demand.
