When managing your project, it is useful to check which tasks and dependencies have a direct impact on the project's end date. If you can identify the activity that is causing the lag, you will be able to add more resources or adjust the scope to bring down its duration, effectively moving back the project's end date to the expected point.
Amplify's Critical Path feature enables you to view the sequence of tasks that dictates your project's end date. On enabling this feature, the system will identify the series of critical activities that form the most extended duration in your project's schedule and highlight it in red colour, creating the critical path on the Gantt interface.
To enable critical path highlighting on the Gantt interface:
- Navigate to the Schedule tab.
- Click on the Filters menu.
- Select the Critical Path option.
You will now be able to see the critical path highlighted in red on the chart. The highlighted path changes if you move the dates of any associated critical task.
Review dates of delivery risks and duration of benefits linked to the schedule milestones are also taken into account in the critical path calculation.
