The Amplify Index is a score that shows how well a benefit, or an initiative, is tracking against its plan. It's shown in the header of initiative and benefit pages, on the Performance Dashboard, and as a column in registers. A score of 100 means it's expected to deliver exactly what was planned. Above 100 means it's ahead of plan; below 100 means it's behind.
Because every benefit is scored on the same scale, the Amplify Index lets you compare financial and non-financial benefits side by side — a cost saving and a customer satisfaction target can both be read as "on plan" or "behind plan" without converting between units.
This article covers both the Advanced and Simple Models. The Amplify Index needs to be turned on for your organization by an administrator — see Turning on the Amplify Index.
Turning on the Amplify Index
An administrator turns on the Amplify Index for the whole organization, with Enable Amplify Index under Administration > Site Settings. While it's turned off, scores aren't shown anywhere in Amplify. See Site Settings.
How a benefit's score is calculated
By default, a benefit's score compares its forecast with its plan, at the end of the benefit's delivery:
- A benefit planned to deliver $200,000 and forecast to deliver $200,000 scores 100.
- Forecast to deliver $180,000 — 10% short — it scores 90.
- Forecast to deliver $230,000 — 15% ahead — it scores 115.
A benefit classification can instead compare the current plan against a baseline, using the Amplify Index Comparison Series setting in its Forecast section. The score then shows how far the plan has moved since the baseline was taken — useful for spotting benefits whose plans have been revised down over time. See Configuring Benefit Classifications (Advanced Model) and Baselines.
Benefits without a score
A benefit needs the series it's compared against to be scored: a forecast by default, or a baseline where its classification compares against one. Without it, the benefit has no Amplify Index. Its score is shown as N/A, such as in the Performance Dashboard's Benefit Status Overview, and it isn't counted in its initiative's score.
How an initiative's score is calculated
An initiative's score is the average of the scores of every benefit under it, including benefits on initiatives at the levels below. Each benefit counts according to its classification's Benefit Weighting — a benefit with a weighting of 2.0 counts twice as much as one with 1.0. Benefits without a score are left out, so they neither raise nor lower it.
In the Simple Model, a program's or project's score is calculated from the benefits you have access to, so two users may see different scores for the same program.
Where the Amplify Index appears
- Page headers — on initiatives, including each of their dashboards, and on benefits. It's hidden while reporting group filters are applied.
- Performance Dashboard — Benefit Status Overview colors the initiative's benefits by their score, and Benefit Threats lists the financial benefits scoring below 100. See Performance Dashboard.
- Registers — as an Amplify Index column, where enabled in the view. See Table View.
Scores are colored red, amber, or green, with a matching status label, using the ranges set under Administration > Status Thresholds. See Status Thresholds.
The Include on Standard Dashboards setting on a benefit classification doesn't affect the Amplify Index — every benefit with a score is counted.
For setting a benefit classification's weighting and comparison series, see Configuring Benefit Classifications (Advanced Model). For how far through delivery a benefit is, rather than whether it's on track, see Managing Benefits.
