There are two different types of Resource Capacity in Amplify: Current Capacity and Planned Capacity.
Current Capacity
Current Capacity is defined by how many users of a resource type the organization has in a given period.
For example:
- x2 users are assigned an 'Engineer' resource type
- User A's individual capacity is 1 FTE
- User B's individual capacity is 0.5 FTE
- The organization's current capacity for Engineers is 1.5 FTE
You can learn more about defining an individual user's current capacity here.
Planned Capacity
Planned capacity is defined by how many people the organization plans to have for a resource type in a given period.
For example:
- Total resource demand for Engineers is 2 FTE for the next year
- Current capacity for Engineers is 1.5 FTE
- Once the organization agrees to contract an external Engineer at 0.5 FTE for next year, the capacity for the period should be updated to 2 FTE. This allows the resource manager to plan months in advance.
Capacity Units: FTE or Days
Capacity and demand can be tracked in FTE or Days, whichever fits how your team plans and staffs work. FTE values are automatically converted to Days, so switching units doesn't require re-entering data.
Enabling Resource Capacity Planning
To enable Resource Capacity Planning under an Initiative Classification:
- Navigate to the Administration
- Select Classifications from the Admin menu
- Scroll down to the Initiative Classifications section and click the 'Edit' button next to an initiative classification
- Under the General Configuration tab, select 'Enable Resource Capacity Planning'
Note: It is recommended that Resource Capacity Planning is enabled exclusively under the Enterprise Initiative Classification.
Accessing Resource Capacity Planning
Once enabled, Resource Capacity Planning can be accessed under the Properties of an initiative assuming the user has the correct permissions. See the Resource Management Permissions article for more information.
The Resource Capacity Planning table should list all resource types in the organization.
Time phased planned capacity values can be adjusted for each resource type.
